QOD-054: Ancient Proverb – Our passions are the winds that propel our vessel. Our reason is the pilot. . .

Our passions are the winds that propel our vessel. Our reason is the pilot that steers her. Without winds the vessel would not move and without a pilot she would be lost.

~~ A Proverb

Today’s quote is an old proverb.

Sometimes the old proverb are the wisest sayings and quotes. OK, were going to have a vocabulary lesson here. In our Toastmasters meetings, we usually have a Word of the Day. This is to help us increase our vocabulary. They are usually words or phrases that have some meaning or usage that would be beneficial for the members to know and possibly use.

Today’s Word of the Day is Proverb. From Dictionary.com the definition of Proverb (as a noun) is:

1.  a short popular saying, usually of unknown and ancient origin, that expresses effectively some commonplace truth or useful thought; adage; saw.
2.  a wise saying or precept;
3.  a person or thing that is commonly regarded as an embodiment or representation of some quality; byword.
4.  Bible. a profound saying, maxim
Our passions are the winds that propel our vessel. Our reason is the pilot that steers her. Without winds the vessel would not move and without a pilot she would be lost. ~~ A Proverb Click To Tweet

Now, what does this quote mean to me?

Passion is what drives us to succeed, keeps us motivated. It is the desire, or feeling that we have for something. That love for something.

The proverb talks about Our reason being the pilot that steers us.  I feel this is talking about what I call our WHY. The Why we have the passion. It is critical in Goal Getting to understand what our WHY for wanting to achieve our goal(s) is. The Reason/WHY is what will keep us motivated when we want to quit or go astray.  Without the WHY, the Reason, our pilot, our vessel will be lost.  Without the passion or the drive we won’t have the desire to continue.

When you set your goal, Know Your WHY, and have a passion for Getting the Goals You Set. Those two will guide you to success.

Go listen to our earlier episode about Why You Should Know Your Why.

The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams. ~~ Oprah Winfrey

Oprah does it

Oprah Winfrey lives the life of her dreams. When she says this quote you know she is talking about you. When I first read this quote, I was going through some questions in my mind about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.

I wasn’t happy doing what I was doing at work. I wasn’t feeling like I was contributing to other people, but more so, I wasn’t contributing to myself.

I wasn’t living MY dreams

I realized I wasn’t living my dreams. I was living others dreams. I was trying to keep my head above water. Not financially, because I made good money. I was trying to keep my head above water because I felt like I was drowning in dullness, with no intention, no meaning to what I was doing. I wasn’t having fun doing what I was doing.

I remembered how I had felt doing some of the things I had done before and the times I thrived when I pursued the work I was doing. There was a time.  I thought back to what I was doing then, and decided I needed to do that again. No matter what it took.

What’s it going to take for You?

Do you have dreams?

Are you living the life of your dreams?

Are you doing something that doesn’t give you the personal fulfillment you are craving?

Are you living your life on purpose?

Go on the biggest adventure of your life. Live the life of your dreams! Be adventurous.

I like visualizing a lot, so the night before a competition and right before, I will visualize myself. I’ll close my eyes, turn away from everybody, and just see myself doing exactly what I want to accomplish.”  —  Kacy Catanzaro #MightyKacy

Kacy Catanzaro nicknamed The #MightyKacy, is the first woman to qualify for the finals of the American Ninja Warrior.
I am a big fan of American Ninja Warrior. I love watching these athletes compete to be the first American to become a Ninja Warrior Champion. This is a tough competition and it takes special skills.

Athletes like #MightyKacy have to set goals and work hard to get to the level they are and compete in these events. This isn’t just track and field, it isn’t just lifting weights, it isn’t just being muscular. You have to be fit! You have to be flexible, physically and mentally.

You have to use visualization to see yourself not only slapping that button on that last obstacle, but completing each and every obstacle perfectly. You have to see yourself doing EXACTLY what you want to accomplish, just like the #MightyKacy does.
You can check Kacy Catanzaro out at her website

I am a big believer in visualization. I run through my races mentally so that I feel even more prepared.

— Allyson Felix
“Who is Allyson Felix?”, you might ask. One of the fastest women on the planet is the answer.
Allyson competed in the 2012 London Olympics and is working on her return in Rio. I have not doubt she will make it. I watched her run in 2012 and was amazed at her form, her grace and her speed!
I’m willing to bet she is already visualizing herself crossing the finish line with a new personal best.
When you visualize yourself doing something, you want to make it your best every time. Allyson says in her quote that she runs through her races mentally so that she can feel prepared.
When you do this, it allows the mind to be able to learn what to expect in every situation. Many athletes visualize all of the possibilities, including the things that can go wrong. They then are able to visualize how they will handle it and what they will do to continue to achieve the goal. This mental preparedness will make it easier for you to respond if it happens and you will be able to react quickly and confidently.
You want to get the prize!
You want to do your best time.
You want to see your biggest paycheck.
Whatever your goal is, you want to SEE You Doing It.
You Can Do It!

EP-24: Eugene Chen – Toastmaster to Goals Master

Eugene Chen - Toastmaster to Goal MasterEugene Chen – Toastmaster to Goals Master!

http://traffic.libsyn.com/goalgettingpodcast/Episode_24_-_Eugene_Chen_Final.mp3

“Do you want to triple you income. Join Toastmasters.”  — said JJ Hanley, Division E Director at our Annual Toastmasters Awards Night for our club. It was a statement as part of his speech to congratulate the members of our Club, who he had presided over as our Area Director for the year.

It was also very prophetic!

Little did the our club members or JJ Hanley know, but Eugene our sitting club President, had just been promoted to Director of Enterprise Collaboration and had indeed, with the increase in pay, tripled his income.  From the time he started at the company to now, his income had tripled.

Eugene as you hear in this episode attributes a lot of his success to Toastmasters and to setting goals.

Eugene Chen is a co-worker, fellow Toastmaster and friend of mine. Eugene and I started working for the same company at about the same time.  We worked together on several projects together, and I was always impressed with him and his charisma, drive, determination and his servant spirit.

We joined Toastmasters at the same time as Charter Members when our company started the club. We both started working through the workbooks and progressing through the projects.

Eugene moved into a new role as Internal Community Manager part of our companies new Enterprise Collaboration project. In this role, Eugene thrived and grew.

5 Big Takeaways from talking to Eugene:

  1. Set Goals
  2. Break big tasks into smaller tasks
  3. Set up an action plan
  4. Know the dates for milestones
  5. Know where you want to be for those milestones
  6. Do what it takes to get to those things

What Quote Hangs on Your Wall

Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t want to work hard.

What Habits Help You Achieve You Achieve Your Goals

  • A little preparation goes a long way. Always prepare.
  • Visualization – see yourself doing what you want to do

Eugene’s book recommendation

Best advice received in life

The best advice Eugene received from life was from his now former boss, Alex Herbert.
“You have to be yourself.” – Make your work life and personal life the same. Don’t be a different person at work and at play.

Parting Words of Wisdom

Don’t aim for titles. Aim higher. Titles will come when you achieve the higher goal.

Put together a plan for yourself.

Join Toastmasters

You’ve probably heard of Harvey Mackay. Harvey Mackay is the author of the #1 New York Times Bestseller  –

Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive: Outsell, Outmanage, Outmotivate, and Outnegotiate Your Competition among other titles.

Today’s quote of the day is from Harvey Mackay

I believe that visualization is one of the most powerful means of achieving personal goals.   — Harvey Mackay

Harvey Mackay know about success and about achieving goals. As his quote states, he is a firm believer in using visualization. I, like Harvey, believe it is the most powerful means of achieving personal goals.

When I put “Visualize It” as one of the the 9 Steps To Successful Goal Achievement, my ebook, it is because it is essential to successful goal achievement. The Goal Getting, Don’t Just Set’em, Get’em program teaches visualization techniques to help you set into your subconscious mind, the exact thing you are trying to achieve when you set your goals.

Do you use mediation or other visualization techniques? The subconscious mind is a powerful tool that we have for our use. Sometimes it can be negatively programmed with limiting beliefs and we have to change those to positive goal-oriented, success-conscious beliefs.

Visualization helps us do that.

Thinking about the process of achieving the goals we have set and imaging us doing them perfectly, executing them in our mind with unrelenting precision, will help us set the mind to believing that we can do it that way and that we can achieve the goals.

Would you like to learn some visualization techniques and meditations? I have done many visualizations myself, and most successful sports figures use these type of techniques to see themselves doing and winning the events the enter.

You can, too.

As we continue this series on Visualization, I will work on creating a Visualization Audio program that you will be able to download and use to start working on visualizing your goals. If you have a specific type of goal you are working on and would like to have the audio tailored to that specific type of goal, (for example, “Weight Loss”, “Exercising”, “Career Advancement”), let me know in the Comments Section.

Once I get the visualization audio files completed and ready for download, I will post on the Podcast Upgrades page and you can enter your email and we will sent it to you.

Visualization is daydreaming with a purpose.  — Bo Bennett

Today’s quote if from Bo Bennett, an Author, Motivational Speaker, Serial Entrepreneur and Psychologist.

Bo has done great things with his life and has excelled in all of them. I encourage you to check him out at his website

http://www.archieboy.com/index.php/bo-bennett

Many people Dream. Dreaming is good. When we talk of Dreaming we are often talking about the process of imagining ourselves doing something or accomplishing something. We dream about being financially free, or a new car or a vacation.  Dreaming is good. It gets our mind thinking about the goals we want to accomplish.

However, often our dreams are really just daydreams. These are dreams without a purpose. Idle thoughts.  They don’t really serve much purpose other than to distract us from our work, or something we don’t usually want to do.

Visualization, on the other hand, is what Bo Bennett says in today’s quote.

Visualization is daydreaming with a purpose. -- Bo Bennett Click To Tweet

Visualization is a key element in the Goal Getting, Don’t Just Set’em, Get’em program. Our subconscious mind is visual for most people. It can make the images we need to see ourselves doing what we want to do.

Visualization exercises allow us to create a picture of the thing we want to do or accomplish. We can control the nature of and the outcome of the vision.

When you visualize something, you want to make sure that you see yourself doing it, achieving it, being it, winning it, etc., and performing it perfectly.

Do you think about what you want to do before you do it? Are you thinking good thoughts about the things you think about?

Visualize with a purpose. Imagine and see yourself doing it perfectly, completely and achieving the goal you are working on. Daydream with a purpose. That purpose should be positive and should be to Get The Goal You Set.

I am an active Toastmaster. I earned my CC – Competent Communicator designation this year. I am almost finished with my CL – Competent Leader designation as well. Our company Toastmaster got very goal-oriented this year with our new President, Eugene Chen. You will get to hear Eugene in a couple weeks explain how he used Goal Getting to Get The Goals He Set for himself and for the Toastmasters Club.

A mentor empowers a person to see a possible future, and believe it can be obtained. -- Shawn Hitchcock Click To Tweet

The last thing I am working on for my CL is mentoring two members. I have to mentor a new member and an existing member. While working and learning in Toastmasters, it is helpful to have a mentor to help guide you through the journey toward becoming a better speaker and a better leader.

Having a Mentor is also important in business and life. Napoleon Hill speaks about the most successful people of his time believing in and having mentors and belonging to Mastermind groups.

I have a personal mentor and am involved in a couple mastermind groups. They are like trusted advisers on business and life affairs.  I am also a Goal Getting Mentor and provide coaching and mentoring services to people to help them Get The Goals They Set.

What Shawn Hitchcock says is true. Mentors empower you to see a possible future, and believe it can be obtained.

If I can help you, if you feel you want to have a mentor to help you achieve your goals. Let me know. You can message me on Twitter or leave a comment asking me to contact you regarding mentoring.

Find someone of like mind and get together with them to work through your action plan and Get The Goals You Set.

QOD-030: Marissa Mayer – I always did something I was a little not ready to do. . .

Marissa Mayer - I always did something I was a little not ready to do. I think that's how you grow. When there's that moment of 'Wow, I'm not really sure I can do this', and you push through those moments, that's when you have a breakthrough.Marissa Mayer

I always did something I was a little not ready to do. I think that’s how you grow. When there’s that moment of ‘Wow, I’m not really sure I can do this, and you push through those moments, that’s when you have a breakthrough” — Marissa Mayer

http://traffic.libsyn.com/goalgettingpodcast/QOD-030_Marissa_Mayer_-_I_always_did_something.mp3

I found this on the Addicted 2 Success website where they shared the “26 Highly Successful Women Share their Most Powerful Quotes” . I liked this one from Marissa Mayer and wanted to share it with you. You can check out the others on their website. Of course, I will likely use more of them for the show.

What a powerful quote from Marissa Mayer. From one of the earliest employees at Google to the CEO of Yahoo. I bet she said Yahoo, when she got that gig! She is a very intelligent and savvy woman. I would say Yahoo, too, if I can get her on the Goal Getting Podcast. So, if you know Marissa, tell her I would love to have her on the show to tell our listeners how she achieves her goals. And Marissa, if you are listening, I get in touch and let me know if you will come on the show. I am sure I listeners would love to hear from you.

I always did something I was a little not ready to do. I think that's how you grow. When there's that moment of 'Wow, I'm not really sure I can do this, and you push through those moments, that's when you have a breakthrough Click To Tweet

This is a powerful message Marissa is sharing. One of the best takeaways I have from this quote is, Don’t be afraid to try something you don’t know. I have heard from countless successful entrepreneurs and executives that you have to say, “Yes”, when you get asked to do something, even if you aren’t sure you can do it. Because as Marissa Mayer says, when you reach that moment where you do go, WOW!, and you push through those fears and those scary moments, that IS when you have the breakthroughs.  That’s when your subconscious mind goes, “Whoa, They weren’t kidding! They Can Do It!”

So, the next time you have an opportunity to do something that you don’t think you know how to do,

DO IT ANYWAY!

When that breakthrough comes, you, like Marissa Mayer, will be unstoppable.

Have you had that breakthrough? Did you push through that moment and do what you didn’t know how to do, but were successful anyway?  I’d love for you to share that experience with us. Let us know in the comments below. Tell us how you overcame that thought of being not really sure you knew how to do it and then doing it anyway. What was the result?

QOD-029: Sara Blakely – Don’t Be Intimidated by what you don’t know. . .

Don't Be Intimidated by what you don't know. That can be your greatest strength and ensure that you do thing differenly than everyone else.WebSara Blakely

The Founder and Owner of Spanx, has grown what she didn’t know into a multi-billion dollar company, that is still privately owned.

Sara’s Quote is:

Don’t be intimidated by what you don’t know. That can be your greatest strength and ensure that you do things differently from everyone else.  — Sara Blakely

Have you ever heard someone in business utter the phrase:

“Oh, That’s the way we’ve always done it!”

I cannot stand to hear that phrase. It means that you were told to ALWAYS do it that way and don’t have your own brain to come up with a better way to do things. OR, you don’t have a brain to come up with a better way to do things. Neither of which I would want to work with, in most cases.

Don't be intimidated by what you don't know. That can be your greatest strength and ensure that you do things differently from everyone else. -- Sara Blakely Click To Tweet

I am familiar with Sara Blakely, coming from Atlanta. I have seen Sara interviewed on several TV programs and have a good sense of her great attitude that is part of why she said this and know that is what got her to where she is today. Oh, and if you know Sara, or Sara, if you are listening, I would love to have Sara on Goal Getting Podcast. You can contact me and let me know how we can get you on the show.

What I think Sara is saying here is just because you don’t know how to do something, don’t let that intimidate you from doing it. If you have an idea, it may be better, more helpful for you to not know so much. It may allow you to use your mind to think of better ways, more efficient or creative ways to do things, or be something.

Don’t let the fact that you don’t know something, go out and do it anyway. You can learn along the way. You may also be able to avoid the “We’ve Always Done It That Way.” thinking.

Go out and Make Today A Great Day.
