Turn New Year’s Resolutions into New Year’s Realizations

It’s the end of the year and like millions of people in the United States and other countries and possibly even on other planets you are probably thinking about making your usual New Year’s Resolutions.

Well, don’t make your usual New Year’s Resolutions because they don’t work. I talked about this last year and I am going to mention it again this year. Why, because you keep making New Year’s Resolutions when they don’t work.

But they could.

I’m going to tell you 3 ways to turn your New Year’s Resolutions into New Year’s Realizations.

  1. Be Specific

    Don’t just make generic, broad, vague resolutions.

    I will lose weight this year.
    I will get a new job this year.
    I will improve my grades this year.
    I will be make more money this year.

    Your resolutions should be more specific.  You should tell yourself and the universe exactly what you want to accomplish this year. Make it specific:
    I will lose 25 pounds by September 1st of this year by eating healthier and being more active.

    I will take a more active role at work so that I can provide more value and I will apply for a more senior position.

    I will work on my top prospect list each day and double my presentations by August 1st so I can make more sales and improve my income this year.

    They key is to be as specific as possible so your mind know what it has to do to produce the results you want to achieve.

  2. Write your resolutions down.

    Most people when they set their New Year’s Resolutions simply say they will do them. In their mind they think about what they want to do.  The use of visualization is a powerful tool. However, if all you do is say that you want to do something, it doesn’t really register in the mind.

    You want to put it down on paper. Put the paper where you can see it everyday and then use the mental act of visualization as you read it to picture yourself achieving that resolution. Seeing the words will register in your subconscious mind more and as you visualize yourself achieving it your mind will start believing it.

  3. Draft an Action Plan.

    After you’ve written down the specific resolution you intend to achieve, you must draft a step by step plan to achieve it. This is the step that most people forget to do. They may write down a specific resolution but they fail to figure out what it will take to achieve it. It’s like we expect Santa Claus to bring it down the chimney at the end of the year and Poof, we achieved our New Year’s Resolutions. But as we know Santa won’t come and bring you your resolution. It’s not magic. It takes action. Create an action plan.

I guarantee, if you do these 3 steps for each New Year’s Resolution, you will turn more of them into New Year’s Realizations.

The truth hurts, but it’s still the truth. This is a quote from one of my best friends, Bud Malmstrom. What Jim Rohn says here is the truth!

How bad do you want it? My last guest at the end of 2015 was Amanda Bayerle. She and her husband, Nickolas recently started their podcast, How Bad Do You Want It? It’s a great podcast that talks to people that had dreams, goals and desires and they did what it took to achieve them.

Do you have what it takes to get the goals and dreams you set? Will you DO what it takes to find a way to achieve your dreams?

I often talk to a lot of people about the goals they set. I listen to a lot of people that want to do something. More often than not, most of the people I speak to about their goals they find a lot of reasons for why they can’t achieve them. They just don’t have time. They don’t have money to start the business they want. Their family doesn’t support them. It takes too much time to be successful.

Do you make these types of excuses?  When I tell people that I get up at 4 a.m. to go to the gym or to start working on my podcast, they look at me weird and say, ”

“Whoa, that’s way too early for me. I can’t get up that early.”

When I tell them I stay up until 10 – 10:30 at night, or that I spend my Saturday and Sundays working on my podcast, they ask,

“How can you do that?”

What they don’t understand is I want to be a podcaster. This is the method I have to share my message. I want to be a paid motivational speaker. I want to help people achieve their goals and dreams. Since I do have a full-time job, too, I have to FIND the time to do what I want to do. If it means I have to get up earlier or stay up later, or spend weekends working on creating my shows, then I do.

They just don’t understand. But they don’t need to. It’s not for them. If you want something bad enough, you will find a way.  Check out the last Quote of The Day, qod202, where I talk about people that don’t understand.

I have a lot of friends and mentors that have succeeded because they did what they needed to do to get there. They didn’t make excuses for not being able to do it.

If you want something, find the way to get it. Do what it takes, do what you need to do.

We will start with one of my top goals for this year. I am Working On Wellness in my own life. If you’ve been listening, I have Type 2 Diabetes. I became diabetic because of bad decisions I made in my life as I worked on other goals.

I didn’t take care of myself when I was working on my career goals. I worked hard, traveled and spent a lot of time on the road. I was very successful at achieving my career goals. However, in doing so, I ate poorly, didn’t exercise enough and eventually ballooned in weight to 296 pounds AND developed Type 2 Diabetes.

I know there are a lot of you that have done the same thing. We concentrate on our goals, our careers and forget to take care of ourselves.

The good news is I started working on my weight. I went to work for a Bakery and wore a 4X smock when I started. 2 years later I had dropped 3 sizes down to a 1 X.  How  did you do that working at a Bakery people ask me. Keep listening to Goal Getting Podcast and learn how I lost 60 pounds working in a bakery.

After I left the bakery, I moved to San Francisco, again working on my career. I gained 15 pounds within a year. With a new career and more money, I went back to some old habits.  I decided to enter a weight loss contest at work. It was a 16 week contest and I wanted to win. I didn’t win. I took second, but I did lose 40 pounds in 16 weeks. How did you lose 40 pounds in 16 weeks you ask.

Listen to Goal Getting Podcast Season 2 to learn how you can lose 40 pounds in 20 Weeks. I’ll give you about 4 more weeks to do it.

After losing that weight, I let old habits slip back in and now I am back on track to not just lose weight. That will be a byproduct of my true goal I have set for this year.

Are you on a journey? Are you in the process of reaching for your dreams? Are you working on goals this year? Where are you headed?

People will not understand you and your motivations. They will not see the final picture that you see. They will not see the vision you see.

What Joubert Botha is saying here is so important for YOU to understand. They DO NOT NEED TO Understand. It’s not for them.

The journey you are on is YOUR JOURNEY. It is not for them. It isn’t their journey. You cannot make them understand why you do what you do. They don’t have to know your Why. It’s Your Why!

Napoleon Hill spoke about the need to find like minded people to bounce ideas off of in his book, Think and Grow Rich. Mastermind groups and Mentors are key to helping you grow and build a business and or idea.

Do you have someone to share your vision with? Do you have ideas that you want to bounce your ideas off of?  You should find a Mentor or a Mastermind group. Mentors are people that have the success that you want to achieve. I didn’t realize the importance of this when I was younger. I wish I had understood it. But I know now. You can search for and find Mentors and Mastermind groups with like-minded thinking that are willing to help you.  They understand.

QOD-201: What? You don’t like change? Do you prefer irrelevance?

This sounds like a snarky comment from General Shinseki, but it’s said with a large does of the truth. Let me tell you a little about General Shinseki.

From Wikipedia: Eric Ken Shinseki (/ʃᵻnˈsɛki/; born November 28, 1942) is a retired United States Army general who served as the seventh United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs (2009-2014).[4] His final U.S. Army post was as the 34th Chief of Staff of the Army (1999–2003). Shinseki is a veteran of two tours of combat in the Vietnam War, in which he was awarded three Bronze Stars for valor and two Purple Hearts.[5] He was both the first Asian-American four-star general(1997) and then the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.[6]

 

I have a great deal of respect for General Shinseki and for all members of the United States Armed Forces, those serving now and those who have served. I have many close friends and family members either in or out of the services. Thank you all for your service.

I served 7 years in the Army National Guard. I served between 1976 and 1983. It was peace time. I had it easy.

If you are not from the States, you should probably thank the military in your country as well.

Now that I’ve said that, let’s get back to the quote.

Change is tough for some people. I have been in Information Technology for many years. I have worked in change management when we brought in new technologies to companies. People get used to doing things the way they want to do them, the way they’ve always done it. That’s one of the worst things you can say to most people in the technology field. “That’s the way we’ve always done it.”

General Shinseki states very truthfully,

“If you don’t like change, you will like irrelevance even less.” 

What does he mean by this. Well, the world is changing. If you don’t accept change, no, embrace change, you will have to deal with irrelevance.

How many of you remember Smith Corona?  How many of you remember the IBM Selectric?  What am I talking about? Typewriters.

How many of you have used a typewriter?

How many of you have one in your home? Would you believe that people used to have 1 or more typewriters in their home?

If you don’t remember Smith Corona Typewriters; well that’s because they don’t make them any more. Once the premier typewriter manufacturer, the company makes labels for bar codes. They became irrelevant. They did pivot and changed, which is a testament to the company.

It also reminds me of a site visit I did to a major mortgage lender in 2003. I was in the process of implementing an electronic content management solution for our mortgage company. Our goal was to go paperless. We visited this lender that had achieved the goal we wanted to achieve.

During the tour of their facility, we were amazed that we didn’t see a single filing cabinet in their office. Well, actually we did see plenty. They were all piled up in one of their conference rooms, but they were all empty, getting ready to go to a scrap company.

All our their lending employees were using electronic documents and processing and underwriting on their computer screens. Only one piece of paper was printed, because the FHA required a signature of the underwriter on it. Once it was printed, the underwriter would sign it, stick it in a bin on their desk. The papers would be picked up several times a day, scanned and then shredded.

When asked how they managed to convince their staff to get used to this, they answered, “Most everyone realized that it was more beneficial for the company and themselves to work this way. We did have one underwriter that couldn’t change the way they did things.”

“How did you change their mind” we asked.

“We didn’t. They don’t work here any more.”

You have to be able to change these days. You have to be able to pivot. This is true in business and in life. If you cannot change. You will be irrelevant at some point.

What Ben Franklin was saying here isn’t that just because you’re finished changing, you’re finished with the need to change. What he’s saying here is that you’re done. Kaput. As good as dead! Is that over simplifying it? I don’t think so. My role is to be part of your accountability team.

If you think change is over, then it’s over because you choose that course. You choose to be the same as you are now, FOREVER. If you choose to be finished with change, with growth, than you are f i n i s h e d.

I am a firm believer in growing, in changing. We are human, we are alive. Living things must grow. They change. My oldest friend, Bud Malmstrom, has what we call Budisms. A Sensei in martial arts, specifically the Bujinkan Ninpo Taijutsu system, Bud taught us that “Without Change, There is  No Growth”. As a living creature, we need to grow. We need to change.

We are always changing, growing. Until we die! At that point in time. Growth, Change stops! If you are finished changing, you’re finished.

I am celebrating another birthday next week. I have grown much in the years I have been alive. I don’t expect to stop changing or growing. Until I die. I still have a lot to do in my life. I still have goals, dreams, wishes. If I was perfectly satisfied with my life, I wouldn’t be satisfied with change. I would want to be better. I would want to help others be better,. I would want to help others grow. I would want to help others change.

I want to help you to change. I want to help you Get The Goals You Set. I’m not finished yet and neither are you. You wouldn’t be listening to me if you were.

My major focus of change this year is wellness. I’m not alone. It used to be that Losing Weight was the top New Years Resolution. This year, it dropped to #3. The #1 New Years Resolution is according to the White House and ABC News is:

To Live Life to It’s Fullest.

Number 2 is To Live a Healthy Lifestyle.

Number 2 is “closer” to where mine is.

If you’ve heard me talk about New Year’s Resolutions, you know they don’t work.

Resolutions, at the beginning of a new year or any other time, for that matter, DON’T WORK!

Why?  Look at them. They are vague and non-specific. They don’t follow any of the characteristics the 5 minimum requirement (SMART Goals) to be successfully achieved, much less the 9 Steps To Successful Goal Achievement that I recommend in my book of the same name. You can pick up your copy on Amazon by clicking on the link here.

Let’s look at the change I have for this year as I #WorkOnWellness as my goal, not as my New Year’s Resolution:

I will work out and eat healthy enough to lower my A1C to below 6.0 by July 1st and reach my goal weight of 185 pounds by the end of the year.

There are more specifics to what I believe a “healthy lifestyle” is for me in The What section of my Goal Achievement Success System that I have written down. Along with The What, I have also created The How to define what action steps I must take to achieve that goal. The action steps are the specific and measurable steps I must do in order to achieve The What. The last step was to know The Why.  Why am I wanting this change? Why do I want to live a healthier lifestyle?

If you know your why, your motivation for wanting to make the changes, you will be able to fight the battles that will happen when your subconscious mind and other start playing for the other team. You will be able to overcome those negative thoughts that make you want to quit, to Be Finished.

I don’t think you’re finished. I think you want to change. Whatever that change is, we are here to help.

Everyone wants to change the world. If pageant winners are interviewed they all want to change the world. They want world piece. They want to fix global warming. Most people believe that changing everyone else will make the world a better place.

Maybe Tolstoy has it right. No one thinks about changing themselves. What if we changed ourselves? Who would that inspire? What they be inspired to do if we changed ourselves?

If we made a drastic changed to ourselves that was amazing and took great courage, great skill, great perseverance, that could be the inspiration for the next big thing.

What if the change in you sparked the creation of the cure to cancer or the next sustainable energy source?  What if what you changed about yourself made someone feel good about themselves. Maybe that would be enough. Maybe making someone smile was enough.

The first step toward change is awareness. The second step is acceptance.

Change is important in life. Without dreams and the changes they have brought we would be in the stone-age. All through life we go through changes. We start as an infant, then as a toddler, then an adolescent, a pre-teen, a teen and then into adulthood. As we grow physically and mentally, we are hopefully growing emotionally, intellectually and spiritually.

Are you wanting to change your life? Are you trying to change the way you look or the way you feel? Do you want to be more than you are today?

Being aware that you are wanting, needing change is the first step. The next step is accepting that you need to change.  As Nathaniel Brandon has share with his quote, when we face the awareness and accept the need to change we have reached the first step.

The rest is up to you. Now that you have awareness and acceptance, you can now start defining the goals to change. You can start drafting the action plan outlining the steps you need to take to achieve the change you desire.

After the first step and defining the goals, the action plan, the next step is the Action itself.

This is the toughest step.

I need to change. I let my health go several years ago as I worked toward my goals for the career of my dreams. I worked hard and didn’t take care of my body. After I became a Type-2 Diabetic, I became aware of the need to change. I accepted that I had to do certain things to change. Knowing and accepting this helps me to define the why and understand what I need to do to change.

Are you a busy entrepreneur that is letting your health go. Join me on my quest to achieve my goal. Set your own goal to change. There will be changes that need to occur. We will need to change habits, change choices, change activities, change our life. Will you be willing to make those changes?  Will you commit with me?

Hello Goal Getters,  welcome to Goal Getting Quote of the Day.

I am so glad you came back to listen today. Today is a special day. We are going to have a great quote from me, Tony Woodall. It’s not great because it’s from me, it’s just really great quote that i was thinking about the other day because I was doing it to myself and it’s something that we should never do. You need to stop talking bad about yourself to yourself.

There are plenty of other people doing that for you. You don’t need to do it to yourself. So that’s the quote! Stop talking bad about about yourself. There are plenty of other people willing to do if for you. You don’t need to do it yourself.

It’s always important for us to remember that we shouldn’t talk negatively towards ourselves. Our thoughts should be positive thoughts. Our thoughts should be positive thoughts that i will help us go through the day and help us achieve the goals we set.  Thinking negatively is part of the subconscious mind trying to control and take over our thoughts and trying to put in those limiting beliefs that it may still have.

We really need to not go that way. We need to stay positive, we need to keep thinking that we’re the greatest, we’re superman. We are the positive, strong people that we want to be and we really have to keep telling yourself that.  The more you tell yourself things like “You’ll never do that.” “Your a loser.” “You can’t get anything right.”, If you start feeding that kind of negative crap into your thoughts into your own mind, it’s really going to fester in there and it’s going to become this negative thought that you just don’t need.

Often times we are in a very hyper-suggestible state, especially when we’re stressed. We get these things going around us and maybe things aren’t going right, but as soon as we start the negative thoughts in these areas, in these times, when we’re very hyper-suggestible that thought can easily seep into our mental subconscious mind even more and help cement any negative thoughts that we may have in there. It can take those thoughts and just put them into a boiling point of how i feel. That we don’t want to feel that because it’s not true. We are positive people. We are strong. We are what we need to do to be able to succeed and it’s important that again we do not talk negative about ourself to ourself. It’s important that we always think to ourselves and say to ourselves, “You are wonderful, this is going to work. You’re going to be able to make it.” We can’t let those negative thoughts go in about ourselves because like i said, We are great.

Failure is a four letter word. OK, well it should  be. It should be one of those words that our parents say, “Shh, don’t talk like that. That’s a bad word.” It should be one of those words that we never have to learn.

Unfortunately, it is out there. The problem is that too many people put too much emphasis on it. Failure can happen. The key to this quote is to understand that if you don’t know what fear is, you likely won’t start thinking those negative thoughts that fear brings out. Fear can debilitate even the most positive person. When you move fiercely with the intent to be successful and don’t let the thoughts of “What would happen if. . .” “Am I sure about . . .” , and other success dampening thoughts into your mind you can move toward success easily.

Having Habits Help You Have a Happy Life.  Patricia Fripp is such an engaging speaker and trainer. I just had the opportunity to experience her fantastic style and professional speaking ability at our company Toastmasters Club. She was excited to come present to our club in San Francisco. Patricia joined Toastmasters in 1974. She joined Cable Car Toastmasters in San Francisco.

I became a member of Cable Car Toastmasters last year as well as being a member of our company club. Cable Car Toastmasters Club started in 1952 and is one of the oldest clubs in the country. We meet on Tuesday mornings at 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. in the Financial District of San Francisco. If you work in that area or are a vacationing Toastmaster, come visit us. You can find our club on Facebook and LinkedIn as well.

Patricia gave a great presentation to our club and when asked how to become a great speaker, she said, Repetition and Reinforcement. These are also two of the keys to developing habits. The key here also is that becoming a great speaker is like creating a habit. You have probably heard the old saying, “It takes doing something 21 times to create a habit.” I don’t think the timing is a critical as the continued repetition of the task you are trying to make a habit. Doing something over and over again, helps build it into a habit. Physical activities become part of muscle memory. You create the habit in the muscle for the activity.

The other key is reinforcement. The conditioning of the body of doing something and having the reinforcement of it makes the habit. There is a habit loop that we get into. We have a trigger, a response and a reinforcement. This builds a habit.

Remember habits can be good or bad. I have fought to change many bad habits. I did an episode on Goal Getting Podcast called Taming My Tiger, where I described how I worked to change my bad eating habits. Do you have an eating habit that is leading you to or keeping you overweight? Would it surprise you to know that you can change those habits? Do you want to become better at speaking in public? Would you be able to improve your career if you were better at giving presentations?

Speak. Speak again, Speak some more. Find a coach to help you understand how to structure a speech or presentation. Join a Toastmasters Club near your home or office.

When you learn the skills to proper presentations and speech structure, how to deliver your content properly to persuade, influence and teach. Practice and get good feedback on how your presentation was, you voice. These are all skills that can be learned and built into a positive habit.

Include public speaking as one of your habits this year. All speaking is public speaking, Patricia says. Make being a good one a habit.
