The best way of learning about anything is by doing.
~~ Richard Branson
Richard Branson brings up a great point here. It’s especially important for someone wanting to learn to be an entrepreneur. You can start studying and researching all about how to be an entrepreneur, learn about entrepreneurship, how to create a startup. I’ve heard it said that 90% of research is procrastination. I agree with Richard Branson. The best way to learn something is to do it.
I studied how people learn and process information in their brains in my study to be a Hypnotherapist. Our brain is a fantastic tool, a computer in the greatest sense. It is well know that people learn audibly, visually and tactilely. My martial arts teacher and best friend, Bud Malmstrom, was also a U.S. Marine. I worked for Bud for a while when I was younger and when he tried to explain to me how to do the work, he would tell me how to do it, show me how to do it and then have me do it. This was the Marine way, he told me.
I have found that the best way for me to learn new things is to do them. I remember when I had to learn how to program a software application I worked on. I worked for Fannie Mae Software Systems, part of Fannie Mae, years ago. The division was acquire by another company that took 27 of the 146 employees. I was on of the 27. The training department was not part of the 27. When the new company wanted to set up training classes for customers, they asked for volunteers. I had never done training at that point, especially programming. I had just started doing some of the programming for this application. I set up the training curriculum and started doing the programming for the training examples. I started doing it. By doing it, I learned it. I became very good at it.
I remember when I first started podcasting back in 2004. I heard Adam Curry talking about how he did it. What it required to set one up. I said, “I can do that.” So I took the notes I made, and did it. I set up the RSS Feed, I installed the recording software and picked up the microphone I needed and started talking, recording, posting and I was a podcaster. I didn’t spend a lot of time studying how to do it. I just started doing. I think it was the best way to learn how to do it. It made it very easy to get started when I started podcasting again 10 years later.
If you want to learn how to be an entrepreneur, do it. Start being an entrepreneur. You will want to learn the things that an entrepreneur needs to know, but most of it will come by doing. Most of it will be OJT, on-the-job-training. but some you will need to take some time to learn as well. That in itself is part of that learning process.
